2013 Word of the Year: Selfie

Posted by | Uncategorized | No Comments

Oxford’s word of the year for 2013 is selfie. (Though, google chrome is still putting a squiggly red line under the word, so perhaps they haven’t gotten the memo yet.)

So, Oxford, what’s a selfie?

Syllabification: (sel·fie)
Pronunciation: /ˈselfē/
(also selfy)
noun (plural selfies)
a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website:
occasional selfies are acceptable, but posting a new picture of yourself everyday isn’t necessary
We convinced a couple of our Duo team members to share their best selfies with us. #GraphicDesignerSelfies #AccountManagerSelfie #TheBossIsTooCoolForSelfies

We learned from CNN’s article on Oxford’s new word of the year that a “helfie” is a photo of your own hair and a “welfie” is a photo of you working out. So, now we want to know what it’s called when you take a picture of your own feet. A “shelfie” perhaps? (Shoe + Selfie)
Our favorite thing about selfie being the Oxford word of the year is that it shows how big social media really is. It’s changing the way we talk, the way we share our lives and most importantly, the way we do business.
So, what do you think? Will you be taking a group selfie at your company Christmas party this week?

Lies Your Boss Probably Believes About Social Media Marketing

It takes too much time.

My customers/clients aren’t on social media.

Social Media is just a fad.

Results aren’t trackable/measurable.

I can’t acquire a customer through social media.

We can’t afford to hire someone.

We’ll lose control of our brand.

At Duo Group, #WeGotThis.

We’ve got the education and talent to help you overcome your social media fears and create a social media marketing plan that will work for your brand.  Give us a call or download our free white paper, “Why Do I Need Social Media?”
